Adam's Journey

When Adam first arrived in the UK in July 2022, he was living in Brighton and feeling isolated.

“I didn't have a family and I didn't know anyone. I was just looking for anyone who can help.”

Adam quickly became an active member of the Conversation Over Borders community, attending the weekly Tea & Talk wellbeing group. Through the support he received from the Digital Inclusion Project, including a laptop and SIM card, Adam was able to stay connected and pursue his interest in cybersecurity, enrolling in training courses to develop his skills for the future.

In 2023, Adam took his involvement in the COB community to the next level by volunteering as an English & Befriending tutor, supporting a learner whose first language was French.  Drawing on his cybersecurity expertise, Adam also contributed valuable resources to COB, creating clear, easy-to-follow PDFs with practical tips on staying safe online. His efforts not only helped learners improve their language skills but also empowered them to navigate the digital world with confidence and security.

“I'd make a PDF and send it to help people at Conversation Over Borders. So, it's been lovely. It's been a nice symbiotic relationship. And it's been going on well.”

Adam has been working hard to complete his cybersecurity certification, which he finished in January 2024. Since then, he has been focused on coding, particularly in Python. At the end of 2024, Adam joined the staff team at Conversation Over Borders, running the weekly Tea & Talk group that he once attended as a participant.

“By working with COB, I realised that I've got empathy, and it's a good thing. I would say that I've learned that it's good to help and, and expect nothing in return.
I think if I was to make a change in the world, it would be for people to see things more positively, to treat people more positively. I would say more love. Out of love, that's when you get cohesion and that's when you get people to thrive."
